Set in Imperial Russia in the late-19th-century, the movie Anna Karenina revolves around the story of a wealthy socialite Anna Karenina (Keira Knighley) who is trapped in a loveless marriage with her older husband, high ranking government official Alexei Karenin (Jude Law). The story becomes interesting as she enters into a complicated and life-changing affair with a young affluent aristocrat, Count Alexi Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). It’s all about love, jealousy, betrayal and gossip – “You Can’t Ask Why About Love.”

The film Anna Karenina also features the parallel love story of rural landowner Konstatin Dimitrivich Levin (Domhnall Gleeson) and his beloved Princess Kitty (Alicia Vikander), who incidentally is enamored with Vronsky, allowing viewers to examine the differences between infatuation and love, and the destructive effects of confusing the two.

Anna Karenina: “I was eighteen when I got married, but it was not love. “

Anna explains to Kitty that she and Karenin did not marry because they were in love, but more for society’s approval.

Count Vronsky: “I love you! “
Anna Karenina: “Why?”
Count Vronsky: “You can’t ask Why about love!”

This is one of the most famous lines in the movie Anna Karenina. When Anna asks County Vronsky why he’s in love with her, he pointed out that it is truly impossible to answer the question why you love someone. It is a feeling that is beyond imagination and simply beyond explanation.

Alexei Karenin: “We are bound together by God and this can only be broken by a crime against God!”

Brokenhearted Alexei tries to save his marriage by reminding Anna of their bond before god.

Levin: “Sensual desire indulged for its own sake is the misuse of something sacred. “

As Levin explains, loving your neighbor’s wife is not true love, but a greedy love. Indulging in worldly acts to satisfy your desires is often an immoral way to break the sacred bonds between those in love.
