A Sad Reality on Social Media

The world of social media is such a scary place. True, it’s wonderful in most cases, but sometimes, it gives its users the power to cower behind the safety of the screen. It gives its users too much freedom of speech knowing that, most of the time, nothing can be done.

Hate comments and hurtful words are often uttered on social media.

But you know what else is common? These things:

Facebook user Ainna Go posted those screenshots above along with the post:

“THIS HAS GOT TO STOP.

First of all, I want to apologize as I did not ask permission to post these screenshots but I at least had the decency to blur out your names. This has been going on for a looong while – I’ve been seeing it on my timeline since God knows when – and I feel like I just have to say something, and this happens to be the most recent one that I saw.

Believe it or not, I have also been a victim of this. I accepted someone a couple months ago and I saw comments of similar nature on his activity that I became friends with him. I can’t find the post because it’s been a while so I can’t make myself an example, but the comments on there where a lot worse like “wasak pepe.”

Anong point niyo? Feel niyo ba cool yang ginagawa niyo? Hindi niyo ba alam na harassment yan? Or are you boys oblivious to the fact that you’re disrespecting the woman? Mygod. This is FACEBOOK, not f*ckbook. Adding a woman DOES NOT make YOU a “hokage,” “strong,” “mabagsik,” or whatever you boys want to call it. Ganyan na ba kayo kababaw ngayon?

This is why people think chivalry is dead. You boys “flirt” on Facebook and think a woman would be willing to give herself to you? What a joke. Hindi nakakatuwa ang ginagawa niyo. Lately I even saw a probably-married guy (most likely in his late 30s/early 40s) follow a woman who’s obviously years waaaaaay his junior, and you know what? I saw comments like this. And it was disgusting.

I don’t even need to educate you boys on how court a woman let alone RESPECT her. Respeto na nga lang hindi pa mabigay!!!!!!

I hope you boys, and the boys who do things like this (I know there’s a whole lot of you), stop this madness and learn to grow up. Kahit pa sabihin niyong “joke” yan. You don’t and won’t ever get women this way.

Isipin niyo na lang jinoke kayo na puputulan kayo ng ari niyo. Na ang liit ng ano niyo. Hindi nakakatuwa diba? Nakakaoffend diba? Parang ganyan lang yun. Lol

PS. Don’t tell me that I need to “grow up” because I’m offended by “mere Facebook comments.” If anyone needs to grow up here, it’s probably you. Don’t promote the culture of silence just because somebody called you out on your harassment. SPEAK UP.”

During my cosplay days, I experienced something quite similar to this but not to this extent.

The fact that those screenshots exist means it happens on social media and who knows to what extent? What really is the point of such rude comments?

Whatever their reasons are, hopefully such things would stop.

Have you experienced this, too? How did you handle it?
