Fortunately, studios abroad are becoming more adventurous with what they’re showing on the small screen.
We round up seven dark TV shows perfect for the cold, dark nights:
7. Gotham
Batman fans will love Gotham, the series set in the Caped Crusader’s famous city. Here, the lead is James Gordon (the future Commissioner Gordon), a young recruit tasked to solve the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
His budding friendship with their young son Bruce urges him to solve the case, while dealing with familiar villains like Penguin, Catwoman, the Riddler, Poison Ivy, and many more.
6. UnREAL
UnREAL aims to show the “reality” behind reality shows, which is that it’s all scripted. Rachel Goldberg is the producer of the dating show Everlasting, and she is constantly pressured by her boss to manipulate the contestants to create drama for viewers. This show will change reality shows for UnREAL‘s viewers. Forbes declared it “one of the best new shows of the summer because it embraces the insanity it presents on screen.”
5. Sleepy Hollow
Many of us are familiar with the legend of Sleepy Hollow, whether through Washington Irving’s Halloween story written in 1820 or the Tim Burton adaptation in 1999. For those who aren’t familiar, legend has it that a headless horseman terrorizes the town of Sleepy Hollow. In the story, schoolmaster Ichabod Crane visits the town with the motive of proposing marriage to the daughter of a wealthy farmer. However, he has competition in the form of the local Brom Bones. One night, Crane is driven out by the horseman, and the daughter ends up marrying Bones. It has been implied that Bones was in disguise but old wives maintained Crane was haunted by the horseman.
The series Sleepy Hollow finds Crane in the 21st century, only to realize that the horseman has followed him. The best part about the series? The first three seasons were set in the real-life town of Sleepy Hollow.
4. Hannibal
Another classic making a comeback on the small screen is Hannibal, which follows the cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs. Here, Lecter hasn’t reached the infamy he achieved in the 1991 film (and the 1988 novel it was based on), and is working as a psychiatrist. He is assigned by the FBI to supervise Will Graham, a profiler investigating a serial killer case.
3. Dexter
On a somewhat similar vein to Hannibal, Dexter follows the titular Dexter Morgan, a forensic technician who leads a double life as a serial killer who hunts down other killers who manage to evade the justice system. Rotten Tomatoes has said that “its dark but novel premise may be too grotesque for some, but Dexter is a compelling, elegantly crafted horror-drama.”
2. Lost
For a truly mind-blowing experience, Lost is highly recommended. The show is set on a mysterious island after a plane crashes. Lost blends science fiction and the supernatural, so survivors must deal with an unseen creature that circles the jungle, evil inhabitants called the Others, and time travel. The show has been called one of the greatest television dramas of all time and has spawned countless conspiracy theories, which were discussed with writers and stars online.
1. The X-Files
The X-Files is an oldie but a goodie. Running from 1993 to 2002, it followed FBI special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Sculley as they investigate unsolved cases involving the paranormal. The show has been so popular that it spawned a second film in 2008 and a 10th season in 2016. It looks like the interest hasn’t died down: last April, it was announced that Mulder and Scully are reuniting for an 11th season this year. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have played the roles all these years and we hope they’ll return for the 11th season!
