5 Things That Will Hit the Spot This Long Weekend

5 Things That Will Hit the Spot This Long Weekend

Two things: it’s great that it’s a holiday today, but it sucks that there’s school/work tomorrow. It could have been an epic long weekend because Monday is National Heroes Day, also a holiday. Imagine the things you could do if the weekend was Thursday to Monday! But we can’t complain. A holiday is still a holiday, and the best part is, no school/work on Monday!

What could we do on this mini-vacation? Here are 5 things that will hit the spot this long weekend:

A movie marathon here would be so much fun!

5. Movie / TV show marathon

A long weekend is the perfect time to have a movie or TV show marathon. If you’re going to watch movies, we suggest a themed movie marathon, like Marvel superheroes, Japanese horror, Jennifer Aniston romcoms, or the worst-performing movies on Rotten Tomatoes. You may also watch movies from one actor or director. Whatever floats your boat.

The long weekend is also the chance for you to catch up on your favorite TV series. Might we suggest new ones like Penny Dreadful (whose cast of characters include Dorian Gray from The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mina Harker from Dracula, and Victor Frankenstein and his monster from Frankenstein), Silicon Valley (a much funnier geek show than The Big Bang Theory), and Halt and Catch Fire (a period drama set in the 80’s made by the geniuses behind Mad Men)?

Rainbow Rowell’s Landline and Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch

4. Read a new book

We can’t complain enough about life being difficult because of school or work, so why not use the long weekend to relax and catch up on a good book? The books making the rounds of social media are Landline by Rainbow Rowell, the same author of Eleanor and Park and Fangirl; and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Both have very different settings, but are similarly gripping. Landline is about Georgie McCool, a TV writer whose marriage is falling apart. When it finally ends, she discovers that she can communicate with her husband in the past, and wonders if she can fix her marriage… or make sure it never happens.

The Goldfinch, on the other hand, is about Theo Decker, who loses his mother to an accident. He grows up with his last remembrance of his mother, a small painting that brings him to the underworld of the art scene. It’s supposedly about “love, self-invention, obsession, and survival,” set in the pretty world of art.

Rabbit Hole

Agot Isidro is breathtaking as Becca in Red Turnip Theater’s Rabbit Hole

3. Have a little culture

Sadly, we tend to put culture in the backseat in favor of mindless thrills like reality TV and primetime television. Of course, no one is to blame because of our many responsibilities. And when you consider that many primetime shows are pushing controversial and intelligent content, who cares? But it’s nice to see a little culture every now and then. A play, an exhibit, or just a day trip to a historical landmark (there are plenty in Manila alone) is enough to soothe the soul and let you appreciate the many beautiful things we have in the Philippines.

This week, Red Turnip Theater is closing their show Rabbit Hole with the amazing Agot Isidro, while Repertory Philippines has Pinocchio the Musical and 9Works Theatrical has The Last 5 Years. School productions are also in season, with Tanghalang Ateneo closing Middle Finger this week, and Dulaang UP opening Measure for Measure.

For art there’s always the National Museum, Ayala Museum, and Vargas Museum. For young art, galleries like Silverlens, Vinyl on Vinyl, and 1335 Mabini are always around to show you what’s new in the art scene.

Nothing can be more comforting than a good burger and a cold beer

2. Have comfort food

Keeping in mind that long weekends are for relaxing, why not gorge on comfort food? And what’s more comforting than a classic burger and a good beer? Our latest obsession is Wham! Burgers and Sausages, which revamped its menu to include sausages. Wham! Burgers and Sausages is a 100% Filipino brand that has outstanding burgers with good, huge, and hearty beef. They recently changed their buns to an artisanal brioche bread that has 30% butter, which is still freshly baked.

Their new sausages are also worth trying. They have the weiner, schublig with cheese, beer sausage, and kielbasa. And you can enjoy them with beer! Wham! offers San Miguel beers and Bavaria, a Dutch brand. It’s definitely worth having on this long weekend.

Wham! Burgers and Sausages are available in Katipunan, SM North Edsa (The Block) and SM Mall of Asia.

They may hate each other sometimes but deep down, the Simpsons love each other

1. Chill with friends and family

Of course, the best thing to do during this mini-vacation is to spend it with people who matter. Catch up with friends you have not seen in a long time. Go on a road trip, have dinner, or coffee with them. Or if you have not seen your family, spend some time with them. Do the mentioned activities. The best people to have around are your folks, so always ensure to give them quality time. Because at the end of the day, when everything has been said and done, the people who would always be there for you is family. What was that line Lilo said about ohana? No one gets left behind.

We’re sure these five activities will hit the spot. We all deserve a treat for the stress and hard work we did the past week. What will you be doing this long weekend?
