20 Alternative and R&B Songs of the 90s That We Really Miss

9. Blackstreet featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen, No Diggity, 1996

This jam has been circulating ever since and was popularized more when Anna Kendrick did her rendition in the movie, Pitch Perfect. This actually served as a national anthem for my friends back in the day!

8.  Mariah Carey, Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone – Breakdown

This single was released from her album, Butterfly.  Introduced sometime 1998, this song makes me feel nostalgic, big time!

7. Ghost Town DJ’s – My Boo

This single was released around 1996 from the album, So So Def Bass All-Stars. This song is just one of my songs when I’m on a road trip! How about you?

6. Brandy and Monica, The Boy Is Mine

This song won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo. Why? Watch the video.

5.  Montell Jordan – This is How We Do It

Montell Jordan released this song around 1996 and was on top of the charts for quite some time.  Reese Witherspoon sang a clip of this song, too in the movie This Means War. And, I think she was cute, wasn’t she?

4. SWV – Right Here

First released in a cassette tape on September 1992, SWV’s Right Here, will always be “right here” in my heart and playlist.  Two days after, they released the CD version and the rest was history.

3. No Scrubs – TLC

This famous American girl group was the epitome of the word: phenomenal.  Even though, Left-Eye passed away due to a car accident, their fans (including me) remained loyal and supported them, all the way.

2. Are You That Somebody – Aaliyah

Another incredible talent, gone too soon.  Aaliyah was well welcomed by the music industry because of her unique and meaningful songs.  She was also a Grammy Award winner for Best R&B Vocal Performance. Released in 1998 and included in the soundtrack from the motion picture, Dr. Dolittle.

1. Weak, SWV

From the album released way back in 1992, this song is a legacy.  Your playlist isn’t a playlist without this song!

How about we do this every week, yeah?
