Exclusive island club resort Balesin was put in hot water on social media this week for their infamous “yaya meals.” A miffed Maggie Wilson-Consunji, beauty queen and fashion designer, took to Facebook and aired her sentiments about how the waiter in the island discriminated against their househelp.
Within the day, Balesin Island Club issued their own statement about the “hullabaloo” which enraged, entertained, and annoyed social media users in the Philippines.
Even famous people weighed in on Twitter. Rufa Mae Quinto herself, who was in the island, even tried the so-called “yaya meal” at Balesin.
And, of course, famous media people also tweeted their thoughts on the matter:
And while congressmen criticized the whole issue as discrimination, there are still a handful of us Filipinos who are still able to find the humorous side of the situation. These are a few of our favorites from the past day’s Twitter feed for #yayameal.
Tweets ranged from pop culture references to funny parodies of the yaya meal in Krus na Ligas.
Some were even creative enough to intersperse it with other popular hashtags like #pogiproblems and personal #hugots.

Yaya meal or not, we really have to give it to our fellow Filipinos to find something to laugh about in any situation. But in spite of these happy social media users who try to keep the conversation light and funny, for the rest of us here, the digital wildfire continues as people are immensely divided on the issue.
