10 Filipino Apps You Should Download Now
These days, everyone has a smartphone. It is both an entertaining and helpful device, which can let you play games, listen to music, watch videos, answer emails, and set meetings using the millions of apps available in both iTunes and the Play Store. But did you know there are helpful Filipino-made apps, too? Here are 10 of our favorites:
10. Manila Rush (Android and iOS)
Manila traffic is the worst. If there’s any kind of world record for traffic, Manila would surely take the cake. Why not make traffic fun (if that’s possible), by playing Manila Rush? In this game, you have to help Miguel pass Manila highways to get to work on time. Manila Rush is developed by Anino Games, whose apps have won multiple awards in game competitions.
9. Globe Services (Android and iOS)
Sometimes it can get confusing for a mobile phone user because of the many call and text promos. If you’re a Globe subscriber, Globe Services is helpful if you want to manage your prepaid and postpaid accounts. You can check your balance and modify it, subscribe to call, text, and surf promos, redeem rewards, find the nearest Globe store, or download music, ringtones, and games. This is a great alternative if you don’t want to transact with Globe using text.
8. Streetfood Tycoon (Android and iOS)
We all grew up with street food. It has become a Filipino icon that everyone has tried at least one street food, regardless of socio-economic status. Ever heard of the joke, “Let’s make tusok tusok the fishball”? (For the uninitiated, it’s a joke making fun of wealthy schoolgirls who eat fishball, a variety of street food). You can manage your own street food car with Streetfood Tycoon and sell your favorites, both local and international—you can even sell french fries! And hey, it might even motivate you and help you manage a real food cart!
7. GDeals (Android and iOS)
Filipinos love discounts and promos. Globe subscribers are in for a treat with GDeals, an app with all the discounts, freebies, and offers all over Metro Manila. You can look for deals based on your location, or type in your interests to tailor the deals based on your preferences. The best part is, you don’t even need to go to the nearest computer store to print out your voucher because you can claim offers directly through your phone.
6. LawJuan (iOS)
It can get crazy to live in Manila, especially when you hear of corrupt politicians, and roving policemen who have sidelines collecting money from innocent motorists and pedestrians. It’s hard to make sense of the law because everyone seems to have their own version of it, but LawJuan is the definitive guide since it’s based on the actual constitution. This app has 10,000 Republic Acts, 2,000 presidential decrees, and 800 Batas Batas Pambansa to help you in case you are stopped over for a crime you have “committed.” It’s best to know your rights as a Filipino, and you can do so without carrying a book all the time.
5. Philippines Radio (Android and iOS)
Apple products don’t have radio functions, but you can install Philippines Radio to get your daily dose of music from radio stations in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Dagupan, and Ilo-Ilo. Aside from streaming the latest tunes, you can also set an alarm to when the radio will start playing and record your favorite shows.
4. GMovies (Android and iOS)
Are you excited for the blockbusters coming out next year? Using GMovies, you can book tickets and even reserve seats, right through your mobile phone. Globe has partnered with Ayala Malls, Eastwood Cinemas, Greenhills Promenade and Theater Malls, Newport Mall, Powerplant, Robinsons Malls and select SM malls to help you schedule your movie. You can pay using credit card, promo codes, and your M-Pass card. You can even watch trailers!
3. Manila Map and Walking Tours (Android and iOS)
Even if Manila has its horror stories, it’s still a great place to live in. The history, the food, and the culture is so beautiful that you’re almost willing to forget the traffic and the crime rate. Almost. If you want to explore Manila, use Manila Map and Walking Tours. You can find museums, churches, markets, and clubs, some of which you’ve never heard of. The best way to explore a city is to get lost, but it also helps if you have a handy guide to direct you in the right places.
2. Globe Cloud (Android and iOS)
Because we’re growing more mobile by the minute, it’s important to have a cloud service that can help us access information wherever we are, whatever device we’re using. Globe has its own version called the Globe Cloud, which lets you back up your contacts, messages, photos, music, and videos. Using Globe Cloud, you can access the stored information using any device, which is helpful if you lose your phone or have an extra one you want to sync it with. Now you don’t need to manually transfer information from one phone to another. Users get 1GB of space, but you can upgrade it, for P15 a month for 1GB or P499 for 15GB. Just be careful storing your sensitive photos!
1. Tara (Android)
One of the heartbreaking things about having a smartphone is the chance for you to lose it. While there are apps that can help you locate your smartphone, Tara is the most fun of all. If you active the kill switch, the phone will scream “Magnanakaw!” (Thief!) nonstop. After all, the app stands for Theft Apprehension and Asset Recovery, and was developed by government whistleblower Jun Lozada. Unfortunately, this app is only available for MyPhone users, but we’re hoping that it will be available for other smartphones.
